MOVIN'
OUT
For 30 years, Billy Joel has been
one of music's great storytellers. Now those stories come to life
in MOVIN' OUT. It's the story of the lives we've led, the
songs we've sung, the days we'll never forget. A story that earned
®Tony Awards for each of its creators, Billy
Joel and Twyla Tharp, and ten Tony nominations in all.
Five
lifelong friends.
Two turbulent decades.
24 Billy Joel classics.
It all adds up to one unforgettable Broadway musical.
The
show set box office records in the first three months of its national
tour and has been earning stellar reviews, from Detroit to Buffalo,
from Boston to St. Louis, and points in between. "The first
national tour of Movin' Out sizzles with energy, vitality
and class," said Chris Jones of Variety.
Five-time Grammy Award winner Billy
Joel and Two-time Emmy Award winner Twyla Tharp bring their combined
genius to Broadway in this stunning new musical blockbuster featuring
more than two dozen Billy Joel classics and the most explosive dancing
Broadway has seen in years.
Time Magazine says "it's
so exhilarating and soul-stirring, it practically bursts out of
the theater." WOR radio says "WOW! A SPECTACULAR
MUST-SEE!" and The Toronto Star hails Movin' Out
as "The hottest show on Broadway!"
Told through the choreography of
Twyla Tharp and two dozen of Billy Joel's hit songs, MOVIN'
OUT is the story of five lifelong friends living through two
turbulent decades that change them, and the world around them, forever.
Songs like "It's Still Rock and Roll to Me," "We
Didn't Start the Fire," and "Pressure" all come together
to weave a musical backdrop which beautifully compliments Tharp's
innovative choreography. The songs and dance take audiences through
a poignant narrative comprised of three main elements: post-World
War II idealism, the Vietnam War and its subsequent unrest, and
finally, survival.
MOVIN'
OUT on tour is produced by James L. Nederlander, Hal
Luftig, Scott E. Nederlander, Terry Allen Kramer, Clear Channel
Entertainment, and Emanuel Azenberg. Musical continuity and supervision
is by Stuart Malina. MOVIN' OUT features a scenic design
by Santo Loquasto, costume design by Suzy Benzinger, lighting design
by Donald Holder, and sound design by Brian Ruggles and Peter Fitzgerald.
The national tour of MOVIN' OUT
kicked off January 27, 2004, in Detroit. Other cities the show in
addition to its Washington stop in 2004 include Denver, Seattle,
San Diego, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Sacramento.
MOVIN'
OUT is a story told entirely in dance and song. The
score is a rich tapestry of Billy Joel songs created over several
decades, here used to follow the story of a group friends from high
school, through war and the difficult adjustment to civilian life
after military service. Joel's music is performed live by an on-stage
rock band, fronted by a pianist/singer. MOVIN' OUT electrifies the
musical stage with the vibrant energy of a rock concert.
Among
the Billy Joel songs in this presentation are "Uptown Girl,"
"Movin' Out," "Why Judy Why?," "Angry Young
Man," "James," "We Didn't Start the Fire,"
and 18 others.

SYNOPSIS
ACT
I
The scene is Long Island in the ‘60s. The romance between
Brenda and Eddie, the King and Queen of the prom, is finished, while
James and Judy, forever sweethearts, are ready for marriage. Their
friend, Tony, is looking for that kind of love, and finds it with
Brenda, who has become her own woman. War takes the men away from
home, leaving their loved ones to pick up the pieces. James loses
his life in combat, while Tony and Eddie return home broken as Judy
grieves.
ACT
II
The vets try to cobble their lives back together. Tony can’t
seem to find a way to reconnect with Brenda, while Eddie can’t
connect with anyone. Spiraling into a lonely existence of drugs
and self-loathing, Eddie takes a tour through a nightmare of his
past, projecting Judy as his guide. By chance, he encounters Judy
jogging in the park, and her forgiveness allows him to finally set
his life back on track. Brenda and Tony rediscover the love needed
to heal their wounds. The friends reunite to discover they have
all found their way back home.
